Translating OT greek into english

Postby mantis8 on Fri Aug 28, 2009 7:17 am

Does anybody know if python can parse koine Greek? This is the language of the Septuagint, the Greek version of the Old Testament bible. I have a project in mind...

What exactly do you mean by parse? Read encoded strings?

No; I just need it to read the Greek text. Here is an example: http://bibledatabase.net/html/septuagint/39_003.htm. I'm sure there's got to be some kind of language pack that can read this and translate it into English.

Thx

http://docs.python.org/library/gettext.html might be helpful, might not.

You will need to find or create translation tables, as there isn't something like Google Translate's functionality built into Python.

This might be useful: http://code.activestate.com/recipes/576890/

Ok cool. I'll check into that. In the meantime, I think my issue may have been resolved already. I found out I can download the OT & NT that are already encoded here: http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~hancock/antioch.htm On the page, it says "To download the complete Septuagint as a zipped Word document in Unicode Greek (1.74 MB) & similar text for the NT, so I'm now assuming python won't have any trouble translating the unicode into english, right?

Also, when I'm in Open Office (in Ubuntu Linux), it gives me different options for saving the text, which includes encoding, so it appears OO may take care of any issues I may have with translation already.
