how active is the forum now?

Postby metulburr » Fri Mar 29, 2013 5:22 pm

It feels like since the return of the forum since a 3 month blackout that there is very little action going on. It doesnt weem like it is picking up either. It seemed like there was a ton of traffic before.

Is this just me or does anyone else feel like this also?

Nope, it's not just you; things have been pretty slow. I suspect it is a combination of two reasons:

  1. The forum has been down for a significant chunk of time. Some of the regulars from the previous incarnation have given up on it and stopped checking whether its back up after a week/month/whatever.
  2. We have lost all the posts from the old forum. Right now, the entire forum has something in the order of only ~1500 posts. The low number of posts means we're less likely to come up near the top of Google searches, so we're less likely to attract new members.
Basically, we're suffering from reverse network effect. Adding the old posts back to the forum (as Taos/jkbbwr said should happen soon) will go some ways to remedying that.

Seems to have increased a little over the last few days, but even the old one had its dry spells, i guess to increase traffic it would need to be advertised somewhere. although there is plenty of posts from the spammers  .

I tried pimping us on HN; didn't seem to help much. It would be good to make it onto the python.org's community page...

I found this forum just after it came back online by searching Google for 'python forum'. This site was ranked #1 in the organic results.
I had no prior knowledge of this site and had never visited it before that point.
I have no idea whether this has changed since then.
Google does funny things to your search results based on sites you have visited before.

[edit] I just searched google again using the same term. still #1 for me. [/edit]

Yes, but most people tend to google something like "how to do X in Python" (or even more generally "how to do X") rather than searching speciffically for a forum. Which is why it is useful for the forum to have a large history of posts on various subjects that can be indexed by Google.

And now this thread is dead.

Or at least hibernating.

most forums consider a thread dead after 1 month, maybe 2. This thread is over 4 months since the last post. Some forums even lock the thread after 1-2 months so people cannot even respond to that thread. It is not that the thread is dead because the forum is dead, it is no one responds to old threads.
