Python beginner - which Python version

Postby DaveP » Sat Jan 11, 2014 10:57 am

Hi All, I've just bought 'Beginning Python' second edition, but as a complete beginner I'm not sure which Python version to download for use with the book, which specifies 2.5x. Obviously, Python has moved on since it was written, and the choice is now either 2.7.6 or 3.3.3 for Windows. Any help greatly appreciated, Dave.

You'll want to download 2.7. It's mostly compatible with 2.5, and you shouldn't have any real problems. See https://wiki.python.org/moin/Python2orPython3

I agree, 3.0 seems to have a few issues with their library. If you're using a mac, I highly recommend sublime text.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Python 3 itself. The reason Micseydel suggested 2.7 is because the OP said he has a book using python 2.5.

The only issue with py3 is that occasionally you might want a library that hasn't been ported. This is less and less a problem these days.
