pygame.org replacement

pygame.org replacement

Postby metulburr » Sat Apr 27, 2013 2:31 am

Now i have nothing wrong wiht pygame.org, except:
new users cannot create an account and cannot hence upload their games to pygame.org for others

I have read through a ton of forums regarding this. Some people have new sites up that imitate pygame.org, but it just never took off. Others say that they are trying to buy pygame.org from the owner. I dont know. But what is the latest info regarding this. I mean this is stupid, that the only people that are allowed to upload their games to pygame.org, is those that made an account before X happened, and new accounts were disabled.

Anyone have any info regarding this?

Yeah I agree, although I actually feel that the site, even when it is completely up and running, leaves a lot to be desired. There isn't even a nice way to get to all your own previous projects in a convenient manner unless you tag them with your name. Also the documentation used to have comments and examples, but because this was so badly implemented and unmoderated it just became another place for spammers. The current Discuss commenting along with the old original comment system that was never removed are also horrible.

The problem with trying to create your own site is that you will never be the OFFICIAL site and it will be difficult to generate near the same traffic. I would love to see someone more responsible and committed take over the domain; completely renovate the site; and get it running and moderated the way it deserves to be. There is unfortunately not even much in manner of ways to contact the site admins.

The only mod I have ever seen on pygame is renesd. I have no clue if he actually owns it or not. You might at least be able to contact him here,
http://renesd.blogspot.de/ or here https://twitter.com/renedudfield.

If someone did successfully buy the domain, I would love to be a part of the new mod team, but as said before, my actual website/network related code skills are fairly non-existant.

i have sent him a message with numerous questions, not sure if he will actually contact me back or not though.

agreed. I think there is a lot more potential to pygame.org than what is currently available.

Being someone that doesnt have an account and cannot create one, makes me just want the account access. But i am sure after that, i could think of more. I mean i cant even contribute to the games database, when i get well versed in pygame.

Well technically there is no games database. The site doesn't host your project. Just lets you put up a page where people are likely to find it, that you can then link to the location where it is available for download. But yes, the fact that you can't make an account to even do that makes me feel like pygame has been abandoned completely.

I've also always felt that the fact you can't even put things in code tags on those pages was ridiculous too.

I noticed that all the spam on pygame.org got deleted soon after you told me you had tried to contact Renesd. Was wondering if this was a direct result or not. Did you ever receive a response back?

It would be cool if they are going to keep paying for the domain, to actually keep up the maintenace on it also, includeing reinstating new user accounts. Creating a new site replicating the old, would work, just getting the traffic over to it, is the pain in the ass. But i have seen maybe 2 or 3 other people who have done this and their website gets abandoned because of the low traffic. So what is the point in making one, i guess.

What sucks in addition to not being able to make an account is people think pygame is dying because the site is not maintained.

Yeah... This is the most recent thread I have found on the matter.
http://pygame-users.25799.x6.nabble.com/Can-t-sign-up-to-pygame-org-feature-disabled-td434.html

In it one guy claims,
pygame.org no longer support new users/new posts.
Which is bull on the second point as I can create all the new "posts" I want. Perhaps he was talking about the documentation commenting system... Who knows.

Rene Dudfield replied to the thread on Jan 03, 2013 with,
It's not permanent, the new site will allow users again.

I have seen no evidence that anything is changing since then though.
